Jaw and Facial Pain After a Car Accident

Individuals may experience jaw and facial pain after a car accident for a number of reasons. In fact, jaw and facial pain are among the most commonly reported symptoms following a car accident. Sometimes, accident injuries can result in a condition known as Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, more commonly referred to as TMJ. Individuals can also experience facial pain after a car accident as a result of a facial fracture, or other injury to the face. Although it is not uncommon for individuals to have jaw pain and facial pain after a car accident, it is often an overlooked symptom.

TMJ can cause individuals to experience jaw and facial pain after a car accident. The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the temporal bones at the front of each ear. The joint operates as a hinge, allowing the mouth to open for talking, eating or yawning. When the joint becomes disrupted it can result in significant pain. Moreover, complications such as teeth clenching may develop. Unfortunately, it is very common to experience jaw and facial pain after a car accident, even where the jaw is not directly impacted.

Whiplash trauma, although common in rear-end collisions, can happen in any type of automobile collision. The force of a car accident typically cause the head to thrust forward and backward, resulting in the stretching and damaging of soft tissues. When a head is rapidly thrust backwards, the lower jaw remains stationary forcing the mouth open and causing damage to the temporomandibular joint. This joint is one of the most complex joints in the body. Accordingly, any problem preventing it from working properly may result in jaw and facial pain. Often, anterior injury occurs, causing a risk of displacement of the articular disc that is found within the temporomandibular joint. Accordingly, many individuals experience jaw and facial pain after a car accident due to injuries associated with the temporomandibular joint.

Facial pain can also result from injuries sustained during a car accident. In fact, facial injuries are also among the most common injuries reported after a car accident. Although the rate of facial fractures has slightly decreased with recent improvements in car design and added safety features, they still pose a serious risk for individuals who become injured in car accidents. People suffering from facial injuries as a result of a car accident often experience significant pain and require medical treatment.
